Nova lei de imigração francesa aprovada pelo Parlamento gera controvérsias e é criticada por inconstitucionalidades.

French Parliament Approves New Immigration Law

The French newspapers this Wednesday (20) analyze the approval, by the French Parliament, of the new immigration law, on the night of Tuesday (19). Shortly after stating that the text “respects the values” of the country, French Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne acknowledged that some measures are “unconstitutional” and may be re-evaluated.

The new immigration law, for example, prevents a foreigner from a non-European Union country, married to a French citizen, from living in the country without speaking the language, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin exemplified to the Le Monde newspaper’s website. To assess the legality of this and other measures, the government will have to submit the new text to the Constitutional Council.

The Le Monde also addresses the main divergences during the discussion of the project, such as the possible end of state medical aid to illegal immigrants, which ended up being removed from the text. The French Prime Minister has committed to examining the issue in a separate project at the beginning of 2024.
